As we look forward to the 2021 season, we will shine the spotlight on a club each week and how they have coped through the pandemic and how they are preparing for the return of cricket. This week it’s the turn of Attock CC

Naz Khan
Attock Cricket Club
How long have you been associated with Attock CC and in what roles?
I joined Attock in 1990 as Chairman
How have preparations at the club for the 2021 season gone?
There are a number of areas such as grounds, finance, pavilion and players; we have an operational plan in place to ensure that each area is covered and tasks are allocated to Management Committee and sub- committees. All tasks are time limited and monitored on a monthly basis by the winter task group.
What are the clubs aims for the season on the field?
We have recruited a couple of experienced players into our 1st XI to ensure that our up and coming youngsters have good role models and experience to tap into. We want to be in the top two of the division if our players play to their full potential. We want to win but not at any cost indeed.
What are the clubs aims for the season off the field?
It is essential that we secure the future of the club in terms of young home grown talent and in this respect we shall have a big focus on our youth section. Working tirelessly to locate our 3rd and 4th XI in a good standard and stable facility. A lot of help is needed to realise this urgent need. Having financial stability is crucial and work is ongoing to ensure that we build funds to pay for our ambitions.
What have been the biggest challenges for the club through the Covid pandemic?
Not being able to organise activities for members. Funds have dried up. Shorter 2020 season resulted in huge shortfalls in our finances. Commercial sponsorship stopped due to restrictions in the hospitality sector. Not being able to use the clubhouse to have social events and gatherings. Not being able to have face to face meetings and most of all not being able to socialise with members.
What community links do you at Attock CC have? Schools/coaching/Womens Institute, etc
We are surrounded by many communities and we have made sure that the name of the club is out there in terms of family fun days, cricket festivals, cricket tournaments (we were the first club to pioneer T10 tournament at the back end of the season attracting between 9 to 12 teams, i.e full capacity). Super10 as it is branded has been running for 6 seasons and every season it gains more popularity and attendance. We work with our local primary schools and indeed our landlord, Moseley school. We are in the process of resurrecting women/girls section this summer to ensure that we are gender inclusive.
Where do you see Attock as a club in 5 years time?
- Strong and thriving youth section, with crop of youngsters in the WCCC youth set up,
- 1st XI to return to the Birmingham and District Premier Cricket League
- A ground and changing facilities for 3rd and 4th XI
- Establish a girls/women section at the club.
- Maintain our Clubmark accreditation.
In general terms what do you find the biggest challenges of running a cricket club?
- Finances
- Facilities for expansion such as having 4 squads playing on Saturdays, we are oversubscribed with our membership.
- To be more inclusive: Predominantly Asian cricket club would prefer to have a better mix of players.
Name one thing that you feel you do well at Attock CC that would be a great model for other clubs? (coaching/event/cricket related/social, etc)
Events (cricket and social) including pre-match preparations to get the game on.
If you could praise one unsung hero at Attock CC who would that be?
Without a shadow of doubt it has to be our groundsman, Mohammed Asim who is founder member of the club and who gives unlimited, love, passion and hours to the club.
Attock CC are based at Wake Green Road (Gate A), Moseley, B13 9UU.
Junior training takes place on Tuesday nights, women and girls training will be held on a Wednesday night between 5pm and 8pm. Senior training takes place on Thursday night between 6.30pm pm and 8.30 pm.
