Be a part of our brand new Sunday Competition starting in 2019!
Join our new exciting Sunday tournament the Warwickshire Sunday Smash. This 100-ball tournament is a great opportunity for our affiliated clubs to revitalise Sunday cricket in the 2019 season by:
- Re-engaging with lapsed players who have stopped playing longer forms of the game
- Playing localised fixtures that encourage families to attend games
- Giving clubs a platform to enhance revenues
How will it work?
WCB aims to give each participating club eight games through June and July in one of four regional divisions, which will minimise travel time and also maximise the opportunity for local derbies. The winner of each division will then progress to Finals Day.
We hope Clubs will make an event of their home games, playing music for boundaries and wickets, staging barbeques and child friendly activities, but most importantly playing some excellent cricket.
We are suggesting a default start time of 2.00 pm, which ensures that clubs can continue to stage junior fixtures in the morning and keep grounds in use all day. However, this is not a fixed start time and clubs will have the flexibility to begin at a time that suits them.
Why are we launching the Sunday Smash?
Sunday ground usage has been an issue for many clubs over the last few years so by playing local fixtures and attracting families along, we hope that the competition is an opportunity to generate much needed revenues into the bars and kitchens.
With the new national 100-ball tournament being launched by the England & Wales Cricket Board in the professional game in 2020, WCB believes that this shorter format is also a very attractive opportunity for the recreational game.
As well as being fast moving and played with a pink ball in coloured clothing, games will be completed in two hours and 15 minutes, which we hope will appeal to the lapsed players who have stood down from the all-day league format due to family, work and other reasons.
We understand that there will be questions from clubs regarding the rules, eligibility of players, likely opposition etc. These will of course be answered at a consultation event in the New Year. However, our ambitions are to:
- Entice lapsed players back into the game and re-engaging with clubs
- Rejuvenate club grounds on Sundays
- Stage local fixtures, which become club events to attract spectators and raise club funds
- Emphasis on competitive cricket played in the right spirit (professionals will not be allowed)
- No league fees
